Abstract: Using corporate loan data from a large Chinese commercial bank (2010–2020), switching firms initially receive lower loan spreads; switching within the same bank (to another branch) also yields lower spreads but thereafter spreads are ratcheted up — evidence of intra-bank hold-up. Deployment of FinTech first mitigates then intensifies this hold-up.
