Academic Lunch Seminar (Session 117) - Interregional Market Segmentation and Firms’ Multi-location Supply Chain Construction

2024-12-12 10:07:39

Title: Interregional Market Segmentation and Firms’ Multi-location Supply Chain Construction

Speaker: Qiu Shanyun, Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Economics, Shandong University. Research: supply-chain relationships, corporate finance, corporate governance.

Abstract: Using matched samples of listed firms and their main suppliers across Chinese provinces, the study shows that stronger inter-provincial market segmentation reduces firms’ procurement from other provinces, hindering multi-location supply-chain construction. Effects are stronger in competitive industries or for products with higher uniqueness. Mechanisms include higher transaction costs, increased lead-time uncertainty, and supply–demand imbalance. Consequences include higher operating costs, lower profitability and TFP. Mitigation via vertical integration, digital technologies and cross-regional trade associations is discussed.

Date & time: 12 December 2024, 12:15–13:15

Venue: Room B321, Zhixin Building, Central Campus, Shandong University
