Title: Intergenerational Income and Occupational Mobility

Abstract: We explore the role of occupation in intergenerational mobility, extending the traditional Becker-Tomes model by incorporating a Roy model of occupational decision-making. While the Becker-Tomes framework suggests that wealthier parents invest more in their children's human capital, evidence indicates that parental occupations also significantly influence their children's occupational choices and income potential. Our model introduces the concept that parents pass down not only financial resources, but also specific advantages and disadvantages tied to different occupations, thereby impacting their children's prospects. This allows for the exploration of occupational choices that may prioritize long-term benefits for descendants over immediate financial gains.
