Course Description:

Ecological economics is the trans-disciplinary study of the interdependence between human economy system and the natural environmental system. It’s a new framework and paradigm, essentially different from the conventional economics perspective, for thinking about the interdependence of the modern economy and its environment. Taking the economic system as part of the supportive natural ecological system, ecological economics studies the sustainable optimal scale of the economy relative to its ecological life support system, a fair distribution of resources and opportunities, and an efficient allocation of resources.Ecological economics integrates the natural sciences (especially ecology) and the social sciences (especially economics but also others) in order to address the interrelated issues of sustainable scale, fair distribution and efficient allocation in an integrated way. The aim of this course is to present the perspective and fundamental principles of ecological economics, and outlines a set of policies for creating a sustainable society as well as instruments that could be used to implement those policies, help students acquire the theory and methods analyzing the modern issues on ecological economy and sustainable development.
