Why School of Economics, Shandong University?

As the Pacific Century is dawning, China has rapidly become a key and integral player in the world. While more and more Chinese are getting a global perspective in their business and/or academic endeavors, many people from the rest of the world are eager to gain knowledge of China, and become part of this exciting development. An ideal bridge connecting these trends is a top school near metropolitan China with a vibrant local economy and profound cultural heritage.

Shandong University (SDU) is perfectly suited for this purpose. As one of the oldest and largest public universities in China, Shandong University has been a top university in China ever since its establishment in 1901. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, Shandong University is ranked as the 8th top Chinese university in 2012 (http://www.shanghairanking.com/World-University-Rankings-2012/China.html).

It is conveniently located in Jinan, Shandong Province on the east coast of north China within 2 hours from Beijing and 4 hours from Shanghai by the high speed train. It is close to the hometown of Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, with deep cultural roots. As one of the largest provinces in China in terms of both population and economy, Shandong Province is also known for the hospitality of its people throughout China.

The School of Economics at Shandong University is now one of the largest economics schools in China. Our vision is to become a leading economics institution not only within China but also in the world with growing research output in top international journals. For this mission, we are enthusiastically committed to a strategy of internationalization, including but not limited to: 

—Annual recruitment of promising Ph.D.s from top universities around the world, who are then grouped together into the Taiyue Center for Research and Education in Economics (TREE) for best synergy. Their publications have already appeared in respected international journals such as Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Economic History, and Journal of Comparative Economics.

— A specially designed undergraduate program with instructions all in English, which is open to both Chinese and international students such that they can interact with each other on a regular basis, as well as a Master in Chinese Economy program with all-English instructions open to international students. 

—Establishment of diverse international partnerships that allow our students to study for one semester, one year or even a degree program at top schools across the globe, such as University of California, Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Duke University, Boston University, Johns Hopkins University, Tilburg University, and University of Queensland. 

—Frequent invitation of distinguished visiting scholars from abroad to teach short courses, give seminars, and conduct collaborative research with our faculty, as well as actively hosting international conferences in economics, such as the PEARL Conference - Public Economics at the Regional and Local Level (2009), International Workshop of Method of International Finance Network (2010), and Annual Conference of Asian Law and Economics Association (2012).
